Saturday 26 April, 1pm - 5pm
Founder and creator of the Record Player Orchestra, Roger Clarke, will introduce the project by leading a workshop that will give you the opportunity to experiment with the record player as an instrument.
Join the first workshop that will lead to the formation of the Record Player Orchestra of Birmingham. Our plan is that In collaboration with Roger the newly formed orchestra will play their first public performance at A3 Project on 4 July.
In the Record Player Orchestra the record player becomes an instrument in which engagement with stylus being physically placed on the vinyl is key. No prior skill or expertise is needed to do this and, as with most aspects of the Record Player Orchestra, all participants are beginners at playing this instrument and all become more adept during their playing. By discovering how to play the record player, participants can start to understand the qualities and particularities of this instrument, what kind of playing might be possible and what might be more problematic.
The first meeting will be an informal afternoon in which you will get the opportunity to experiment with sound and find out what could be done with playing a record player as an instrument individually and most importantly as an ensemble.
